How to Prepare for Adopting a Pet

Adopting a pet is a fun and exciting time for everyone involved.

Make sure you’re ready for it by taking these necessary preparations:

Make Sure it’s the Right Time to Adopt a Pet

Adopting a pet is a long term financial and emotional commitment.

It will cost you more than just the initial adoption fee; Adoption means providing a home, food,

veterinary care, emotional care, and much more. If you have a family, make sure that everyone in

the family wants a pet, and is prepared to help take care of it.  If you live alone and are thinking

about adopting a pet, make sure that you have a schedule that allows you to give your pet

the attention that it needs.

Do Your Research

research pet adoption

It’s easy to visit a shelter and adopt the pet you find the cutest, but this can

lead to a later realization that the pet you chose isn’t the right fit for you,

your family, or your lifestyle. For example, if you don’t get outside much or don’t

want to find yourself taking multiple walks a day, you’ll want to avoid energetic pets

that require a lot of activity, such as Russell Terriers, LabradorRetrievers,

and English Springer Spaniels. In addition to an animal’s energy levels,

some other things you should research are things like:

– Grooming needs for specific pets

-Common health concerns for different breeds

-Nutrition and dietary needs

-Your community’s policy on pets

Modify Your Home

Just like you would modify your home if you were bringing home a

newborn baby or a toddler, you should do the same thing when bringing home a new pet.

Make sure that your home is ready for the arrival of a new cat or dog by moving valuables

out of reach from your pet, cleaning up the house, and purchasing as many essential pet supplies

as you can. This will help to ensure a smooth transition and allow your pet to

adapt easily to their new home.

Check Out The Shelter Online

Every shelter is different. Save time by looking at the shelter’s website

to see what animals they currently have up for adoption, as well as any pet programs

or resources that they provide. By doing this, you can avoid feeling overwhelmed

when stepping into the shelter for the first time. Sometimes, adoption applications

are available online. Since most shelters vet people that want to adopt before allowing

them to take a pet home, it’s helpful to fill out an adoption application for the shelter

you choose to ensure you are approved before you find the perfect pet for you.
